Collingwood City kicked off their FFA cup campaign with a dominant start over Lara United. Collingwood faced the State 5 West team away from home on Saturday afternoon.
Having got off to a solid start, it took Collingwood 34 minutes to find a break through. Josh Kweifo-Okai received a ball wide on the right, which he drilled across the box - evading Jake Buckley at the front post - only for Jason Minglis to find himself on the receiving end of the pass and side foot the ball into an almost empty net from 13 yards out.
The provider then turned goalscorer in the 44th minute, with Josh scoring a real poachers goal. The ball came into the box from a long throw to Adam Gallo who was able to flick the ball on, but could only manage to hit the post, with Josh quick to react and tap in the loose ball from only 3 yards out.
It was more of the same in the second half for Collingwood, as the passion and desire to progress though to the next round of the knockout competition saw a few heated challenges and the game threatened to get out of control. However, it was Josh who yet again was the goalscorer in the 63rd minute, He was able to gather the ball from deep in the midfield before beating 3 players in a fantastic run towards goal and slotted the ball in the bottom right corner.
Collingwood continued to keep Lara reasonably quiet at the other end and it wasn’t long before Josh was again involved in Collingwoods’ fourth goal. Late in the game, he was able to collect the ball from outside of the opponents box and take on the right back before drilling the ball across the box, only for the ball to take a deflection off a last ditch effort by the defender, which turned the ball in the direction of the Lara goal and comfortably sailed in to the back of the net.
The final whistle blew shortly after handing Richard Bates his first competitive win of the new season and handing Collingwood their best result in the cup competition since the revised format was introduced.
The draw for the 2nd round will take place on Monday 29th February.
