Reserves 3-0
Our Reserve side took to the field today missing a key component of the team, Coach Ross Evans who was coaching his U11 side in the Miniroos, hosted by Sandringham. Former Reserve coach and CCFC mainstay, Craig Fuller took the helm in the hopes of steering the side to a win and final three points on the year.
Tom Snaith took the task to visiting Elwood City with first half goal to give us some confidence heading into the break. He would come off in the second half to save his legs for the Seniors clash.
Captain for the day, Craig Tweedy made it two after the restart before an all out assault on the Elwood goal commenced. Marc Perez-Yates saw his shot sail over the bar as our counterattacking football forced some last second defending out of the visitors' backline. Jamie Shek slotted a third in to the far corner, leaving the goalie flat-footed and only able to watch as the net rippled from the shot. Tweedy had a chance to make it four as he was played in, beating the offside trap. Tweedy did all the hard work, walking the ball around the keeper, but could not put his shot on target at the end.
Seniors 5-0
With a second place spot secure and a playoff match to come next week, the Seniors looked to build momentumn as they made their case for a chance in the third tier of Victorian Football. Both Jake Buckley and Mike Maddocks entered the day tied for the Golden Boot for State League 4 East with 15 goals each. Buckley started on the bench, having woken up with a migraine that morning, while Maddocks went to work on the wing.
We had not even been on the field for ten minutes before defender Adam Gallo nodded home a Nicky Tzevakos corner to give us the lead. The first half saw the action contained to the Elwood side of the park as the Citizens pressed for a second. Tzevakos supplied countless corner kicks, but we were unable to latch on.
Changes came in the second half as Billy Carter Jones made way for Marc Gavigan in order to preserve him for the playoffs. Our lead doubled as Andreas Karlsson scored his maiden goal for the seniors with a classy outside the box strike. Captain Dan Quinn made way for Jake Buckley, who promptly made it 3-0, having been played in by his competition, Mike Maddocks. Not content with letting Buckley lead the score sheet, newly captained Maddocks scored a minute later to make it 4-0. With ten minutes remaining however, Buckley made a great run down the right side and Elwood's keeper was unable to collect the ball cleanly, giving us a 5-0 score and Buckley a total of 17 on the season.
Congratulations to both Jake Buckley and Micke Maddocks on their excellent performance this season and an amazing goal tally of 33 goals for our Seniors. It is also worth mentioning that Lee Hayward has put in a total of 36 goals across all three teams this year as well!
Your Citizens will next face off against Springvale City this Saturday at 2:30pm in Port Melbourne. The winner will play Ashburton United for the remaining spot in the State League 3 South-East.
