With a fight on our hands for the coveted second place for the Seniors and top of the league recognition for the Reserves, we squared off against Monbulk Rangers this past Friday.
The Reserves were able to maintain their top spot with a first half goal from Jake Buckley who is back in form (and back in town!). Second half goals from Graham Evans, Cormac O'Brolchain, and a cheeky rounding of the goal keeper from Javier Ureta sealed off the visitors.
The Seniors would have an up and down first half. We would unfortunately lose the services of Clement Piedras to a torn ligament in his groin a few minutes after kickoff. We would then take the lead with a header from Mark O'Connoll from a well delivered set piece. Unfortunately we would give up that lead in the second half as a Jake Buckley goal late in stoppage time would not be enough to stop a 2-4 loss.
The Golds boosted their run into promotion on the back of four goals from Dean Leigh against their former club, Old Scotch. Graham Rawson and Aleks Brkovic levelled the game off for a 6-3 win. With the four goals this weekend, Leigh is on a nice round 40 goals for the season, clear from his nearest rival for the league golden boot by more than double digits!
The Silvers had a Bye, so nothing to report from them.
We are away against Boroondara-Carey Eagles on the 25th. The Reserves will kick off at 1:00pm and the Seniors are in action at 3:00pm.
A reminder to all that we will be having our 40th Anniversary celebration the Friday after, August 31 at Kevin Bartlett Reserve! We would love to see our former players and current families there to celebrate our club and supporting our team as they have their last home game against South Yarra that night!
