Only a few games to go in the season and the Reserves are in contention for a flag!
Away at the newly christened Boroondara-Carey Eagles, the Reserves went down in the first half 1-2, despite a great goal from the ever present Javier Ureta. We would also see Senior Assistant Manager Danny Bates grab a yellow card for his efforts on the field. In stoppage time David Herman would run up from his box to take part in a final corner kick to try and keep our point advantage over the second place Eagles. Jack Griffiths would flick the ball on to captain Jamie Shek who smashed it home, giving us a second goal and rescuing a point away, despite protests from the home side.
The Seniors did not fair as well, going down a goal early, but fighting hard for the majority of the remaining minutes. There was a flurry of shots in the final ten minutes with several players beating the goalie with their shots, but being denied by the woodwork. Interestingly enough, Dan Bates would come on as a sub and grab a yellow card again, his second of the day in two matches, within two hours.
We were happy to watch as Gabe Buchannan came on with 15 minutes to go, making his senior debut. He joins Adam Gallo, who also debuted at 15 (and apparently both attended the same high school ... we might need to start recruiting there) as our youngest players to make their way through the ranks and show a bright future for themselves and the Cityzens.
Both Silvers and Gods had a Bye this week, so nothing to report from Sunday.
We also celebrated the 10th anniversary of our CCFC All Abilities side this weekend with a wonderful BBQ to see the season close. We are especially grateful for the coaches and volunteers who have been dedicated to the side this season, ensuring that every Cityzen has a chance to enjoy the beautiful game.
Join us this Friday at home as we celebrate our 40th anniversary as a club here in Melbourne! There will be souvlaki and a reunion of the former players. Everyone is welcome!
